Office Hours, Office #4 [ 09/05 ]
Minsc was finally finding a good use for his desk that didn't involve crashing a sword through it. When he came into his office today to do...something, he wasn't quite sure yet, he found there a whole bunch of skunks engaged in some boisterous, potentially ale-induced brawling. He, of course, could not stand for such things, especially not in his own office, and he cleared his throat to get their attention. "Listen up, here, you striped stinky creatures of furry disposition! What is all this? This is not how you fight! This is not how you grapple your brothers in a game of wrestling comradary! You are all over the place! There is no pride! LISTEN UP! Do not make me sic my hamster on you!"

It was the long and dramatic reading of speech about fighting for honour and goodness that lead Minsc to pace the room and to, eventually, climb up on his desk where he had some of the skunks in rapt (well, bleary-eyed and confused) attention. Most of them went back to fighting and calling each other's mothers muskrats, but Minsc didn't seem to notice the derogatory slurs, because he cheered them on from his commander's position. "That is right, skunkly brother! Defend your mother's honour! Prove to that uncouth mongrel that your mother was a saaaaaint!"

[[ door is definitely open and therefor the room is probably very audible from the hall ;) ]]

Mohinder tapped on the open door.

The skunks weren't so much of a suprise - he was doing his best to ignore the one that had trailed him, maudlinly telling Mohinder's knee about a lost comrade or was it a sweetheart or maybe a tree. The desk stance was a little more of one.

"Everything all right?" he asked.

"Oh! Hello, Sir Mohinder!" Minsc greeted his fellow teacher from his place on the desk. "Yes, of course, everything is in order of goodness! I was just telling the skunks here about the virtues of honour and justice! Right, Boo?"

Boo squeaked, dashing across the room, two skunks stumbling after him with the need to hug him. Minsc just let out a chuckle at their antics. "Cute little stinkpods, aren't they?"

"And how have they taken to the concepts?" Mohinder looked down at the scuffling skunks then up. "A lesson best learnt from on high, perhaps," he said, gesturing up at Minsc.

"Affectionate certainly," Mohinder said with relief, as one detached itself from him and dashed wobbily to embrace a desk leg. "If a little intoxicated."

Minsc chuckled again and then carefully (because otherwise he'd just crash right through that useful little platform of a desk) sat himself down with a few grunts and groaning joints suggesting his creeping age and his wear-and-tear over the ages, to sit down on the desk. He gave the spot beside him a hearty strike, should Mohinder wish to take the invitation to come join him. The other teacher was surely small enough that it could support the two of them without a problem.

"Yes, they do seem to have hit the ale quite copiously, don't they? Probably doesn't take 'em much to get a little liquored up, being so small and all. But they have good hearts and good spirits; they just need a little--" He slapped his hands together loudly, and pushed one forward, smooth and steady "--straightening up!"

Mohinder picked his way through the drunken skunks to lean back against the desk.

"I'd suggest sobering them up first," he suggested with a grin. "They might have more attention for it after being dosed with black coffee."

Minsc rubbed his chin a little with the great paw of his hand as he thoughtfully examined his troops of skunks who had, for all intents and purposes, dissolved back into reckless brawls since their commander had sat down.

Finally, he gave a conclusive, slow shake of his head. "But it is so much more fun this way! Just look at them!"

"They certainly look enthusiastic about their current state," said Mohinder, hopping out of the way of a pair of fiercely engrossed skunks. "It would probably be wrong to bet on them, wouldn't it?"

Minsc seemed to carefully be considering it, especially since he had that one with the eyepatch--yes, eyepatch-- pegged as a clear champion. He sighed, shaking his head. "Very. Unless," he held up a finger, "they were brawling with the clear knowledge that their fight was being a matter of money and gambling. Without their consent, however, alas! Which is a shame, too, as they are drunk, and drunken consent is still no consent at all."

"But if the wager was puely theoretical, with no money changing hands?" suggested Mohinder. "And then surely their ignorance would prevent outside factors, such as bribery, affecting the contest."

He shrugged. "In any case I trust your first class contained less drunken violence."

"Much less!" Minsc agreed with a laugh. "And hopefully it shall stay that way! Do not get me wrong! I love a little scuffle--" he did a little one-two jab with his fists in the air "--as much as the next ranger, but what we will be dealing with...well, that's a bit more than a little scuffle, with all the fangs and the claws and the fiery bits and the poisons and such, you know."

Mohinder hoped the claws, fire, fangs and poisons weren't all part of the same creature. "My home dimension lacks supernatural animals, so I'm afraid I don't. Are all magical creature dangerous, or is that just your class' focus?"

Oh, they were. Minsc couldn't wait until week eight!

"Oh, well, all magic is dangerous by principle alone," Minsc said, ducking his head a little to match the sudden gravity of his voice. "It's just a matter of whether or not you know how to use it. And that is what the class is about! Magical creatures can be quite good and useful if you know what do to, and quite terrible and full of badness if you do not."

"So much like any other tool or living being," said Mohinder. "Life without magic may make a world less complicated, but it doesn't make it safe."

"I have to admit, Sir Mohinder," Minsc mused, "I find it difficult to imagine a world that has no magic."

"And I the opposite until I came here," Mohinder responded. "But all we have are old stories; the current wonders are ones of science."

Minsc gave a slight smile to that. "There are a great many people in my world who dabble in the sciences as well, although I have noticed that here, your technology is far more advanced, smoother, and less likely to explode in your face when you use it!"

"Did science have much effect on your ranger duties?"

"We have had a narrower focus to work in," agreed Mohinder. "By now things tend not to explode. Unless they're supposed to."

"If one considers," Minsc said, his oddly mangled accent taking on an almost philosophical tone, "an intimate and deep relationship in understanding the nature that surrounds oneself and the creatures which call such a world home, which I do, then, yes, I would say that science has worked its way into my life quite heavily. Natural science, which is as natural beauty, in all its glory! All its splendor! All its...MAJESTINESTITY."

That was totally a word.

Mohinder couldn't help but grin at his enthusiasm. "You've an interest in the wider aspects of ecology and biology then. I'm more used to breaking things down to their smallest parts - the patterns, buildings blocks, numbers can inspire just as much awe in discovering how life is put together."

Minsc thought about the description of Mohinder's sciences very carefully, eyes narrowed in consideration as he stroked his chin. "I find this very intriguing," he announced. "But probably far beyond my ability to grasp! I am simple man, Sir Mohinder. I like the great, sweeping, larger--" He leaned back to open his arms to the great theoretical panorama "--of the world, and only like the breaking down of things into smaller, bittier parts if it is being done with the hack of the steel of my sword!"

"I'm glad the steel of your sword and the strength of your arm has served you well so far," Mohinder replied. "But hope your need of them is less frequent here."

"There's the gym or Mauvase Chance holosuite for fights against simulated foes, between any genuine threats the island thows up," suggested Mohinder. "And I'm sure there are skilled others you could practice with; I'd offer myself but I doubt I'd make much of a challenge."
