Office Hours; Office #4. Monday [ 07/13 ].
Barbarism.

The word had been sticking to Minsc like a...well, like a barb since Saturday, and while he didn't let it show that it was bothering him (really, you could tell by all the humming), it was definitely getting the rub on him.

Barbarism. Of course it applied to him, he was a bloody barbarian! What could you expect? Him to take a great big stick and shove it up his bottom end so he can talk all hoity-toity and not kill people just because they were evil or not go rushing straight at really big things with your sword wielded or not die for women you were sword to protect with your life or not slurp things out of big tankards with it dribbling down your chin? Where was the fun in that? What was the point?

Minsc didn't get it, he didn't want to get it, and today in his office he was going to make sure he was being extra barbarous to make up for it. That explained all the daggers and short swords that were sticking into things like walls and the door and his desk and why all the books (all four of them) were thrown together to make a nice little (contained) fire for light and warmth (it was plenty warm, but it was probably barbarous to sweat a lot, too), and why Minsc had his feet promptly thrown up on his desk and why he would belch with abandon and scratch his arse every now and again, too.

There. Barbarism. And Minsc couldn't be happier.

[[ door and post are open, of course! ]]

Sophie was merely wandering over from her office after Art, and had to stop to consider the picture Minsc made when she reached his door. "Good morning, Sir Minsc. Ah. Is that fire quite contained?"

"Good morning, Lady Sophie," Minsc returned and he leaned forward a little from his reclined position in his chair to examine the fire in front of his desk. Of course, it was very contained. He didn't think it would be very nice to let his barbarism burn the school down, and, besides, he had a hamster. Still, it didn't seem very barbaric to respect property like that, so he settled back with a ne'er-do-well shrug. "Maybe. Who knows? We shall see."

"Did the books do something to offend you? Perhaps this weekend?" Sophie asked, leaning against the doorway and sipping her coffee, expression bemused. "I had hear rumors on the Radio, but I never know quite how seriously to take them."

"They are an emblem of civilization," Minsc informed her, with a nod, "and therefor must suffer my barbaric plight."

"Do you mind if I come in and watch civilization burn?" Sophie asked, utterly intrigued. "And I didn't realize you had a plight. When did this happen?"

"Oh, of course, come on in," Minsc said. "I'd offer you a seat, but, as you can see, there are daggers in it and that might not be very comfortable> And I guess it happened this weekend. Maybe longer? I am not sure."

"They're very interesting daggers." Sophie really felt as if she were talking to one of the occasional warlords or foreign officials that she'd had to deal with from time to time as a thief. She carefully perched on the arm of one chair, and tapped the hilt of one weapon with a fingernail. "Do elaborate. I'm considering my next assignment for class. Art being an emblem of civilization, I'm interested in why it should be destroyed." And not just squirreled away in a large storage space to be gloated over at irregular intervals.

That all....sounded way too complicated for Minsc. He started at Lady Sophie for a moment.

"Errr...well, you see, I'm a, errr, barbarian. I guess instead of art in the form of stuff, we create art in the form of killing things. Which people in the habit of making art in the form of stuff this is barbaric, but, I mean, what do you expect, we're barbarians."

"To barbarians," Sophie said, toasting him. "Please don't burn my stuff." She paused, wondering if that was too civilized. "Or, alternatively, I'll give you a very nice Scotch if you don't."

"Oh, no," Minsc said, sounding very civilized about it, actually, despite the speech he'd just given. "I would never burn your stuff, Lady Sophie. Not without permission or unless you really, really deserved it..."

Then he chuckled a little. "Although I might still take the Scotch, if you're still offering!"

"I don't think I'd deserve it, or at least if I did, the poor possessions wouldn't." Sophie was quite fond of some of that. "But if I do ever need a spot of arson, I'll call you. And I've got the Scotch in my office; come by when I have office hours, and I'll hand it over," she said contentedly. "And that's very magnanimous of you. Transcends civilization, that."

"When's your office hours?" Minsc wondered, because drinking while at the job? Definitely barbaric. Minsc approved!

Sophie would have been oddly okay with that, since part of her wasn't sure what she felt about having a regular job again. "Rather random, but they usually seem to be Fridays," Sophie admitted. "I need to do something to keep my weeks more anchored in between. Aside from play practices, that is."

"Then I shall have to try to keep an eye out, Lady Sophie, and perhaps drop in to distract you from your work!" said Minsc. "And are you in the play, then? A thespian of sorts?"

"I am! I'm at the Boards, playing Lady MacGruder, a noble Scotswoman in the midst of a war, and if I tell you anything else, I shall spoil the ending," Sophie said grandly. "Many of our students are in the play as well. It's The Scottish Play." She paused. "Hopefully Geoffrey won't be a beaver again this week. Rather unnerving."

"I was a bear once!" Minsc offered brightly, finding that a very clear next step for the conversation, really.

Stunningly, Sophie found that completely believable.

She also wondered if Eliot would fight Minsc this year.

"I... haven't been anything yet. I wonder if I shall." Sophie frowned. "Did you know you were about to become a bear?" She poked at the fire with the toe of her shoe, giving it an assessing look.

"No," Minsc said, "it just kind of happened, but, thankfully, I changed back before the cruise! I know a woman who can turn into a wolf whenever she wants and I once knew of a magical item that could turn you into a bear at will, but this was much more random than that."

"Perhaps I should have a contingency plan in place. Someone to let me into my flat, make sure I don't end up in the pound." Sophie frowned. "Hmmm. Although that does beg the question of how you communicate as an animal-- were you able to get that across, when you were ursine?"

Once you gave in to the madness and barbarism it was almost comfortable, living on the edge of impossibility.

"I think Boo helped a lot," Minsc said after a moment. "But I have always been good with communicating with animals, Lady Sophie. Should you find yourself in an animalistic form, I would be happy to help as well as I can! When my friend Rosie turned into a red panda thing, I helped her for weeks!"

"Red panda thing," Sophie said, deadpan. "Well. Thank you, Sir Minsc. I appreciate your offer of assistance. And if I see a bear that resembles you at some point, I'll be certain to buy you a jar of honey. Or possibly a steak?" She looked over at Boo. "And some food for Boo, of course."
